Some benefits of Ocean Swimming

 Introduction

In my life I find easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of every day life where I am constantly bombarded with demands and distractions and it can be difficult to find time to just stop and breathe. I crave for away to find peace and calm in the midst of all this chaos.

Ocean swimming – also known as wild swimming, or swimming in nature – is a great way to for me to disconnect from the busy world around and find some inner peace. Not only that, but it comes with a whole host of other benefits, both physical and mental and is a great way to make new friends.

The feeling of being one with nature

One of the best things I love about ocean swimming is the feeling of connection with nature that it brings. I enjoy being part of the environment and actually part of the ocean itself. I can feel the power of the waves, and take in all the beauty and wonder of nature around me. The sensation of being at one with the ocean, surrounded by diverse and vibrant sea life, makes me feel calm and peaceful. Plus, taking a dip in the ocean can reduces my feelings of stress and anxiety, while also providing a sense of achievement. By immersing myself in nature and connecting with the rhythm of my stroking, I improve my mental wellbeing and almost always emerge feeling invigorated, relaxed and nicely tired at the same time.

A sense of freedom

Becoming part of the ocean gives me a sense of true freedom. Without the restrictions of day-to-day life on land, I can move freely and enjoy the sensation of being part of something so much bigger than myself. The freedom I feel when I’m in the water helps me forget about the worries and stresses of everyday life – even if it’s just for a short period. With no technology insight, I can truly get away from it all and appreciate the majestic beauty of the ocean.

Enjoying the banter and chat with fellow swimmers

Most of the ocean swimming trips I do are in groups for safety and company. One of my most enjoyable aspects of this is connecting with other ocean swimmers. Friendships are quickly built up over our shared love of ocean swimming. During the breaks in the swim we always enjoy a chat and laugh together. Often I start the next leg of the swim with a big smile on my face and giggle rocking my belly.

The physical and mental health benefits

Swimming in the ocean isn’t just good for our mental wellbeing – it’s also great for our physical health. The constant movement of ocean swimming gives me a low-impact cardiovascular workout, providing an intense yet gentle exercise session. It can be as intense or relaxing as I want it to be - the choice of pace is up to me. Plus, being immersed in the largest body of water on Earth naturally stirs up endorphins, so I almost always leave feeling on a high.

Post swim recovery

I really enjoy the time after a swim! Food tastes so much better and I can eat or drink what I want or relax on the couch without feeling guilty because I know I’ve earnt it! My personal favourite is enjoying a fruit smoothie, my body just laps it up whether it’s relaxing at home or chatting with fellow swimmers at a café.

The sense of community among Ocean Swimmers

One of the great things about our ocean swimming adventures is the community of like-minded people I’ve met. People from all walks of life have made the ocean part of their lives and are proud to call themselves “Ocean Swimmers”. The sense of shared purpose and knowledge creates a bond, making for a truly special and unique experience. I’ve been able to make new and meaningful connections with people who understand what I’m going through, which is one of the biggest spinoffs from ocean swimming.

Conclusion

Ocean swimming is a great way to connect with nature and reap the joys of the ocean. Not only do I experience a strong sense of connection with the natural world, but I’m also able to reap the physical and mental health benefits of swimming in the sea. On top of that, I’m able to get away from it all and experience a sense of true freedom, as well as share the joy with other like-minded ocean swimmers and make lifelong friendships.
